HISTORY
SINCE 1974
Monticello Golf Club started out in 1974 on an area of about 140 hectares thanks to the initiative of two brothers, Alessandro and Biumo Panza. Theirs was a courageous and far-ranging vision of a golf club with two 18-hole courses surrounded by 600 villa/ apartments. Modelled along the lines of a “Resort” in the United States, at that time in Italy, there was nothing similar.
The now fully achieved aim of the Club, which became a reference for later similar constructions, was to create a sporting/ residential structure where member residents could live in a community at one with nature. The urban and architectural projects were drawn up by Architect Luigi Caccia Dominioni.
The two international courses which are constantly being modified by well known architects owe their present layout to the intervention of Graham Cooke. The merit of the structure was immediately acknowledged internationally and Monticello was awarded the organisation of the Italian Open in 1975. This was won by Billy Casper. The Italian Open was held six more times over the following years with the wins of some of the greatest players in the world: Sam Torrance, Sandy Lyle and Greg Norman who, along with Constantino Rocca, remains the record holder of the course at 63 strokes.
Every year male and female amateur international tournaments are held at Monticello Golf Club, including, over the years, The European Amateur Team Championships ( won in 1999 by Italian players), The European Boys Team Championships and International Female Championships.
